“Dissociation” is perhaps the piece in which I go deepest in my efforts to immerse myself in the depths of the unconscious. In the projected video, I review my video archive, which includes unreleased material, fragments of old performances, and new recordings made specifically for this project, where I recite my poetry in front of the camera. This dialogue is established between multiple and contradictory «selves,» some presented on video and others live. I use scenic resources that allow me to lead the audience towards a state of silence and immersion, with two screens, surround sound and warm lighting.
The recital and video are presented in a bilingual Spanish/English format, with a sign language interpreter at my side. It is a collaboration made with Jules Zinn for the Poetry Foundation. In this work, I address the topic of suicide, both from a personal perspective and in regard to its relevance in today’s society. The strategy behind this creation is cursed, as it involves a process of self-destruction by openly talking about suicide, murder and death as forms of liberation.
In this compendium, it brings together my most recent and (to date) unpublished poetry, along with some of my fundamental poems that have become conceptual pillars and maps guiding my creative path. “Dissociation” is a deep, introspective, dark and penetrating work that explores dense and hurtful themes with unreserved honesty.
