In “Spanish class,” I challenge the audience to repeat the cursed verses of my most terrifying poetry. In the United States, people are extremely horror-prone, but I come from real horror. In this performance, I not only address language and language barriers, but also the cultural contrast in our relationship with horror as a literary genre. As an incentive, I award participants with tickets that I pull from my vagina, as a way to reward their effort in trying to say a verse in Spanish, no matter how badly they do it. It is an act that fuses the uncomfortable with the linguistic, challenging the audience to explore and confront their own fears and limitations in an atmosphere of tension and reward.
